‘A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST’ – BUENOS AIRES SCREENING

After the terrific turn-out in Clapham for the last Euro premiere in London, it’s now up to the Argentineans to see out 2012 for Recoil. Buenos Aires will host a second South American screening of ’A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST’ on Thursday, December 20th at the Cinema Village Recoleta.

Recoil fans will remember the special evening back in 2010 during the ‘Selected Events’ tour, where ‘A Strange Hour’ was presented in Buenos Aires at Niceto Club. This time, fans can come together and experience the full HD concert film projected in a professional state-of-the-art cinema with 5.1 surround sound.

Due to previously confirmed screening events currently taking place in Europe, Alan will not be able to attend personally. Nevertheless, there will be an After-party at Unplug Bar for everyone who wants to come along, featuring local DJs. Entrance will be free, with a free drink included for all cinema ticket holders!

To be assured a seat for the screening, get your tickets in advance - do not leave it until the day. Pre-sold ticket-holders also receive a free A3 poster which can be collected at the cinema on arrival.

Accompanying Recoil’s Blu-ray release of the film directed by Attila Herkó, this unique event is being brought to you through the efforts of Ricardo Merin (Depeche Mode Tributo Argentino) in conjunction with Village Cines, and supported by the dedicated team that followed Alan Wilder & Paul Kendall during those special concerts in Argentina.

‘Village Cines’ Recoleta is located in one of the most happening areas of Buenos Aires. The newly-renovated complex was re-opened just one year ago, incorporating the cinema which features the latest in analogue & digital projection, with 3D and a full 1080p video system, supporting DTS-HD MA audio.

‘WANT’ – THE ARCHITECT MIXES : FREE DOWNLOADS AVAILABLE AGAIN

We have been inundated with enquiries about the Recoil track which appeared recently in the advertising campaign for the popular game ‘HITMAN : ABSOLUTION‘.

The track in question is ‘Want’ – Architect Steppa remix. The game was released across North America, Europe and other PAL territories on November 20, 2012 for PlayStation®3 & Xbox 360®.

The original version of ‘Want’ appeared on the Recoil albums ‘Liquid’ (2000) and ‘Selected’ (2010). Three remixed versions of the track, which features Nicole Blackman, were expertly put together by Architect, the creation of German mastermind Daniel Myer and were made available back in October 2010.

Inexplicably, Recoil’s record company removed the downloads page where the ‘Want’ Architect mixes were originally hosted – we have no idea why. But the good news is that we have now re-hosted the package directly via Shunt and made them available once again, entirely free, including the original artwork and the tour booklet which accompanied the ‘Selected Events’ tour.

In 1993 Daniel Myer founded the legendary electro-industrial/EBM project Haujobb. Since then he has made a name for himself within the electronic scene and initiated many other projects such as HMB, Newt and Destroid. Since 2007, Myer has been a permanent member of the renowned Swedish EBM band Covenant. Architect was created in 1998 and can be easily described as the most fascinating of Daniel’s projects. Focusing primarily on minimal techno, powerfully distorted sequences and razor-sharp breakbeats, Architect creates a unique hybrid of electronica with smooth ambient soundscapes, rendering the results suitable for both listening and dancing.

Alan Wilder explains: “After embarking on a series of live events, I found myself re-visiting and re-working many of my favourite pieces. With this in mind, I also kept my ears open for interesting people to contribute to this process and quite early into the tour was introduced to Daniel and his array of projects. I spent many an hour in various hotel gyms, headphones connected, being strangely hypnotised by his work – in particular from Architect’s album ‘Consume Adapt Create‘. I subsequently asked if he would be interested in taking part in some of the events we had planned and he and I struck up an instant rapport. His approach seemed to fit perfectly with what Paul Kendall and I were doing in the live arena. The inevitable result of this new-found friendship elicited this set of remixes of ‘Want’. No real guidelines were given – just that Daniel should do his thing to this track as it had never been remixed before and was crying out for some alternative treatments. I hope you enjoy these three variations on the theme and, like me, will appreciate the use of surgically placed sounds, haunting ambience and complex intelligent arrangements.”

Yes – a premiere of ‘A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST’ is to be presented in Amsterdam at none other than Pathé Tuschinski on 29th November. The Theater Tuschinski is no ordinary cinema but one of the most renowned and impressive red carpet venues you will ever see.

For logistical reasons at a very in-demand cinema, it makes best sense to have all seating available in one large screening room, and so the only presentation will now be at 6.30pm with all sold tickets still valid. As quite simply the Netherlands’ most beautiful picture house and a seriously cherished building in Amsterdam, this huge Art Deco palace was the crowning achievement of Abraham Tuschinski – a self-taught Jewish tailor from Poland. Tuschinski was on his way to America in the early 1900’s when he was waylaid in Rotterdam and ended up developing a movie theatre enterprise in Holland instead.

Built in 1921, the theatre was erected based on the designs of architect H.L. DeJong, with interior decor by Pieter den Besten and Jaap Gidding. The exterior is a cross between Art Deco and Gothic architectural styles, and the main foyer is imposing in rich reds and golds – with its paintings of paradise birds and peacocks, a plush and colourful carpet hand-woven in Morocco, and a bar of bronze and marble.

Famous for presenting the likes of Maurice Chevalier, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Domino & Dionne Warwick, the elaborate main auditorium is no less breathtaking, earning the theatre the nicknames of ‘plum cake’ or ‘dowager bonbon box’.

During World War II, Abraham Tuschinski (along with most of his family) died at a Nazi concentration camp. His beloved Theater Tushinski was taken over by the Germans and re-named Theater Tivoli because they could not bear the patron’s Polish-Jewish name. After the war, Tuschinski returned to its former glory and between1998 & 2002, Amsterdam’s monumental theatre underwent a painstaking restoration with the historic auditorium ‘Grote Zaal’ exuding an allure of an opera, canopied by two large balconies one above the other, hanging above the audience.

‘A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST’ – GUIMARÃES (PORTUGAL) SCREENING

Some tickets are still available for Recoil’s film screening at the VERY special venue lined up in Portugal. On Friday 23rd November, ‘A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST’ will be presented at the appropriately named Black Box @ Plataforma das Artes in Guimarães, very close to the city of Porto.

Just a 35 minute drive from Porto, Guimarães is the city chosen as this year’s European Culture Capital. The Recoil event will be an official part of the 2012 Capital of Culture program, jointly promoted by the ECC and included in their ‘Icons’ series, which has already featured the likes of Laurie Anderson and Thurston Moore.

We can now bring you news of an added after event too. Free to all cinema attendees, the after-party will form part of the 10th anniversary of SYNERGY, a celebration of some of their best dance parties dedicated to rock & electro music. This anniversary party features two special guests - Alan Wilder of course, and Adolfo Luxúria Canibal from Mão Morta - one of the most important alternative rock bands in Portugal. SYNERGY nights usually attracts up to 1000 people so we expect a great turn out for this special night. Make it a cinema and all-night party double bill, all for only €10!

The Plataforma das Artes project involved the transformation of ‘the square’ (a series of older buildings) into a multi-functional space dedicated to arts, culture and social activities. It is an ultra-modern construction boasting several exhibition rooms across 3 floors – including the Black Box : a totally black room prepared for projections and multi-media happenings. It is a stunning space with state-of-the-art equipment as you can see from the photos of the entire complex ( by João Morgado - www.photo.joaomorgado.com ). The white foyer areas will be set up for the other aspects of the event.
