We have some great news! Following the recent screening events in Europe, we have a very limited number of Deluxe editions of ‘A Strange Hour In Budapest’ left over. Back in June, due to overwhelming demand, all stock of the limited deluxe version sold out. It took us all by surprise as it had only been available on-line for 24 hours and many people missed out on this version.

After many many requests, we have decided to make 100 of these ‘Tour’ editions available again at the Recoil store.

Directed and edited by Attila Herkó, Recoil’s concert film is a full HD production, with DTS-HD 5.1 surround sound and stereo soundtrack mixed by Alan Wilder & Paul Kendall. The tour edition arrives in a deluxe DVD-sized 6 panel digi-pack with reinforced slipcase, containing a 170gm 16-page booklet packed with information and photo manipulations by Ákos Szénási. The disc also features extra promotional films and live projections.

To all intents and purposes, this edition is indistinguishable from the original deluxe version. The slip case, digi-pack, disc design & disc contents are all identical. The difference is that the booklet inside is very slightly smaller, although the number of pages and contents are exactly the same. Note : this edition is not individually number-stamped.

So there you have it – a collector’s item and a chance to finally grab this if you missed out first time around. Believe us, these will be snapped up in no time so be really quick if you want one.

Order all NOW via the Recoil Official Store.

All on-line orders are dispatched with an exclusive code to receive downloadable extras such as a PDF art booklet with extra spreads, a soundtrack sampler, Recoil ‘live’ photographs and project wallpapers.

For full details about the release, formats, technical info, downloads, concert stills and more, please visit : www.bluray.recoil.co.uk

Note : The Recoil 8GB USB stick special bundle has now sold out.

Following the recent Recoil film premieres across Europe, Canada & South America, a series of special radio broadcasts will be taking place worldwide over the next weeks. A one-hour edited mash-up of ‘A Strange Hour‘ has been provided for streaming to a selection of stations. This is an exclusive edit of the source material which was used for Recoil’s performance as it appeared in the film ‘A Strange Hour In Budapest’ (without the audience soundtrack).

Over the coming weeks, the radio special will be broadcast by Danish, Swedish, German, Polish, Norwegian, French, Dutch, UK & US stations as well as many more still to be confirmed. We will keep updating this page as further scheduling gets locked in.

This version of ‘A Strange Hour’ has been supplied for radio streaming purpose only and is not designed to be downloaded – we would ask that you respect that. We believe it works as a perfect follow up to the Recoil screening events of the last 4 months – so if you are connected with, or run, a credible radio station/ internet streaming radio or similar outlet which has a definite established audience, we would like to hear from you.

2013 SHUNT PRODUCTION

—-

‘A Strange Hour’ was presented during 2010 & 2011 in 52 cities across the world as part of the ‘Selected Events’ tour to celebrate 25 years of the Recoil project. The events were not so much ‘live’ band but more art installation. The music is comprised of stripped down, edited sections from many Recoil remixes and alternative versions, combined so that what we end up with is recognisably Recoil but doesn’t necessarily sound like the studio versions. The second Budapest presentation and last of 2010 was held in the beautiful Szikra venue. A concert film, directed by Attila Herkó, was shot using the latest HD technology with full 5.1 surround sound, resulting in the release in 2012 of ‘A Strange Hour In Budapest’ on Blu-ray disc.

These events accompany Recoil’s Blu-ray release of the film directed by Attila Herkó. We hope to have some deluxe Blu-rays on sale at the cinema – this could be the last chance to grab this exclusive format as they are nearly all gone now.

Founded in 1970, the Melkweg is one of the most well-known cultural centres within the Netherlands, and is unique for uniting five artistic disciplines under one roof: Concerts, theatrical & dance productions, films, media art presentations and photo exhibitions are staged in five halls and several smaller rooms.

A non-profit organisation, the now famous venue was born when a Dutch theatre group discovered a deserted dairy factory in the centre of Amsterdam. Hard work, ambition and NLG 25,000 (about EUR 11,000) enabled the group to transform the factory into a meeting place, initially during the summer only. During the 1970s, the Melkweg became a household name and started developing more in terms of content, offering room for experiments relating to music, theatre, dance and film. The ground floor of the building now houses The Max (capacity 1,500) and the Oude Zaal (capacity 700), which are used primarily for concerts and events. The Photo Gallery and the Café-Restaurant are located on the Marnixstraat side, while the upper floor is occupied by the Cinema (90 seats), the Theaterzaal (112 seats), the Mediaroom. a foyer and the Tearoom. In May 2009, Melkweg opened a new, state-of-the-art theatre hall, together with neighbours Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam (City Theatre) and Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

We have been inundated with enquiries about the Recoil track which appeared recently in the advertising campaign for the popular game ‘HITMAN : ABSOLUTION‘.

The track in question is ‘Want’ – Architect Steppa remix. The game was released across North America, Europe and other PAL territories on November 20, 2012 for PlayStation®3 & Xbox 360®.

The original version of ‘Want’ appeared on the Recoil albums ‘Liquid’ (2000) and ‘Selected’ (2010). Three remixed versions of the track, which features Nicole Blackman, were expertly put together by Architect, the creation of German mastermind Daniel Myer and were made available back in October 2010.

Inexplicably, Recoil’s record company removed the downloads page where the ‘Want’ Architect mixes were originally hosted – we have no idea why. But the good news is that we have now re-hosted the package directly via Shunt and made them available once again, entirely free, including the original artwork and the tour booklet which accompanied the ‘Selected Events’ tour.

Go here to see all the download options : WANT DOWNLOAD

You can view the HITMAN : ABSOLUTION trailer here.

Also part of the original package : a film to accompany Daniel’s main mix, using time-lapse photography and directed by the brilliant Dmitry Semenov. Dima’s captivating short film features Daria Kuznetsova and Sergey Kochetkov.

Other extras include a downloadable photographic book, shot during Recoil’s European tour between April & May 2010 by Ivana Kostelničáková Dvorská, plus an additional bonus mix of ‘Jezebel’ by Ehron VonAllen.

In 1993 Daniel Myer founded the legendary electro-industrial/EBM project Haujobb. Since then he has made a name for himself within the electronic scene and initiated many other projects such as HMB, Newt and Destroid. Since 2007, Myer has been a permanent member of the renowned Swedish EBM band Covenant. Architect was created in 1998 and can be easily described as the most fascinating of Daniel’s projects. Focusing primarily on minimal techno, powerfully distorted sequences and razor-sharp breakbeats, Architect creates a unique hybrid of electronica with smooth ambient soundscapes, rendering the results suitable for both listening and dancing.

Alan Wilder explains: “After embarking on a series of live events, I found myself re-visiting and re-working many of my favourite pieces. With this in mind, I also kept my ears open for interesting people to contribute to this process and quite early into the tour was introduced to Daniel and his array of projects. I spent many an hour in various hotel gyms, headphones connected, being strangely hypnotised by his work – in particular from Architect’s album ‘Consume Adapt Create‘. I subsequently asked if he would be interested in taking part in some of the events we had planned and he and I struck up an instant rapport. His approach seemed to fit perfectly with what Paul Kendall and I were doing in the live arena. The inevitable result of this new-found friendship elicited this set of remixes of ‘Want’. No real guidelines were given – just that Daniel should do his thing to this track as it had never been remixed before and was crying out for some alternative treatments. I hope you enjoy these three variations on the theme and, like me, will appreciate the use of surgically placed sounds, haunting ambience and complex intelligent arrangements.”

For the first ever Recoil event to be staged in Holland, coming very soon, a film screening at probably the greatest cinema in the world! Yes – a premiere of ‘A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST’ is to be presented in Amsterdam at none other than Pathé Tuschinski on 29th November. The Theater Tuschinski is no ordinary cinema but one of the most renowned and impressive red carpet venues you will ever see.

For logistical reasons at a very in-demand cinema, it makes best sense to have all seating available in one large screening room, and so the only presentation will now be at 6.30pm with all sold tickets still valid. If you purchased tickets for another time slot, your ticket will still work fine for this screening. And the good news is that extra tickets are also now on sale - we have an exclusive offer from HiFi Klubben (which just requires membership / free to join). If you are really quick, you can purchase some discounted tickets for just €10.

Go to : http://www.hifiklubben.nl

As usual, Alan Wilder will be in attendance to host a Talk & Q & A session about the ‘Selected Events’ tour and film project. There will be an After-party in the VIP lounge with Bar & djSPUD who, as well as his own monthly alternative events, has featured at Cyberia, Underground Frequencies & Summer Darkness, and spins a wide range of dark underground genres effortlessly combined into a very danceable mix.

Finally, for sale at the cinema, there will be a limited amount of deluxe tour editions Blu-rays up for grabs! In addition they can all be individually signed by Alan. See www.store.recoil.co.uk for full product details.

As quite simply the Netherlands’ most beautiful picture house and a seriously cherished building in Amsterdam, this huge Art Deco palace was the crowning achievement of Abraham Tuschinski – a self-taught Jewish tailor from Poland. Tuschinski was on his way to America in the early 1900’s when he was waylaid in Rotterdam and ended up developing a movie theatre enterprise in Holland instead.

Built in 1921, the theatre was erected based on the designs of architect H.L. DeJong, with interior decor by Pieter den Besten and Jaap Gidding. The exterior is a cross between Art Deco and Gothic architectural styles, and the main foyer is imposing in rich reds and golds – with its paintings of paradise birds and peacocks, a plush and colourful carpet hand-woven in Morocco, and a bar of bronze and marble.

Famous for presenting the likes of Maurice Chevalier, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Domino & Dionne Warwick, the elaborate main auditorium is no less breathtaking, earning the theatre the nicknames of ‘plum cake’ or ‘dowager bonbon box’.

During World War II, Abraham Tuschinski (along with most of his family) died at a Nazi concentration camp. His beloved Theater Tushinski was taken over by the Germans and re-named Theater Tivoli because they could not bear the patron’s Polish-Jewish name. After the war, Tuschinski returned to its former glory and between1998 & 2002, Amsterdam’s monumental theatre underwent a painstaking restoration with the historic auditorium ‘Grote Zaal’ exuding an allure of an opera, canopied by two large balconies one above the other, hanging above the audience.

We can now bring you news of an added after event too. Free to all cinema attendees, the after-party will form part of the 10th anniversary of SYNERGY, a celebration of some of their best dance parties dedicated to rock & electro music.
The Plataforma das Artes project involved the transformation of ‘the square’ (a series of older buildings) into a multi-functional space dedicated to arts, culture and social activities. It is an ultra-modern construction boasting several exhibition rooms across 3 floors – including the Black Box : a totally black room prepared for projections and multi-media happenings. It is a stunning space with state-of-the-art equipment as you can see from the photos of the entire complex ( by João Morgado - www.photo.joaomorgado.com ). The white foyer areas will be set up for the other aspects of the event.

‘Spirit Of Talk Talk’ is a lovingly put together dual project which came into the public domain during September this year. Alan Wilder acted as the musical & production supervisor for the double album which features over 30 different artists. Full details further down the page.

So what’s happening in brief…

During his talk and discussion at the library, Alan will explain his admiration for Talk Talk, how his involvement came about, and he hopes to be able to introduce one or two special guests who have appeared on the album. There is also a James Marsh-curated animated visual display planned, some live Talk Talk films, as well as copies of the ‘Spirit of Talk Talk’ book & album available for purchase.

Later in the evening, the party will move to Nørrebro, where 2 Recoil presentations of ’A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST‘ will be taking place at Empire Bio.

Alan will again be in attendance to host Q & A sessions about the ‘Selected Events’ tour and film project. There will be a Meet & Greet opportunity both before and after the screenings – and for sale at the cinemas, we have a very limited amount of deluxe tour editions of the Blu-ray up for grabs! In addition they can all be individually signed by Alan.

Says Alan : “This day has just been developing over the last few weeks and the interest from fans of both projects has been overwhelming. Many Recoil fans seem to appreciate the Talk Talk legacy, and likewise, I have received some wonderful feedback from Talk Talk fans about my own involvement in the tribute album, as well as the Recoil contributions to that. All in all, this is the perfect crossover to make for an inspiring and exciting day in Copenhagen!”

So come along, help spread the word. We want to see you at the library AND at the screenings, finishing up at the after-parties with Alan and 400 Danes!

The double tribute album celebrating the visionary band Talk Talk is out now on Fierce Panda. All proceeds from the release will be going to ‘The Rare Bird Club’ charity. Alan Wilder is the musical & production supervisor for the project which features 30 artists, including: Recoil, White Lies, King Creosote, Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Zero 7, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Joan As Police Woman, Sean Carey (Bon Iver), Lights, Goldheart Assembly, Thomas White (Electric Soft Parade), Fyfe Dangerfield (Guillemots), Thomas Feiner, The Black Ships, Turin Brakes, as well as Ian Curnow, David Rhodes, Gaynor Sadler and Martin Ditcham, all of whom worked with Talk Talk.

The CD package has been designed by Talk Talk’s graphic artist, James Marsh, using his cover created in 1983 for a prospective album ‘Chameleon Hour’ which was never released.

Says Alan : “I think we have ended up with a hugely impressive collection of heartfelt covers, submitted with genuine affection and respect for the Talk Talk legacy. For me this is a fitting tribute to a massively underrated group, made with few compromises over quality and commerciality. It is made out of love. All in all, given the parameters of any collection of more than 30 artists, I can safely say ‘Spirit Of Talk Talk’ is the best tribute album to any artist that I have ever heard and I am proud to have been a part of it.“

As with Denmark & Norway, the screenings of ‘A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST‘ in Stockholm at Bio Rio on November 11th have proved extremely popular. However, as promised, we have managed to squeeze some additional places into the main screening room and the cinema has now made those extra last few tickets available.

Says Alan Wilder : “Interest in tickets for the premieres has far exceeded our expectations. We have done all we can to accommodate the extra demand although it took a little time to set up. Thank you for your patience.”

Rio is one of Stockholm’s only surviving single screen cinemas from the 1940s. The cinema was uniquely preserved after a grant was received in 2009 in order to restore and rebuild much of the old environment. Full praise must go to the cultural organisation FHP (Folkets Hus och Parker) for stepping in and reviving the venue. Renovation, installation of digital projectors with the option for 3D film and live link ups to New York’s Metropolitan Opera, plus a bursting film programme aimed directly at increased audience engagement all ensued.

Coupled with a wonderful cafe, a salon with bar, sofa and screens, luminous ceiling, gold curtain and beautiful lighting throughout, Rio’s classic ’40′s style offers us a glimmer of hope for the way things should be. A real palace for cinema, and not just another multiplex supermarket.

Two further screenings of ’A STRANGE HOUR IN BUDAPEST‘ will take place in Salong 4 - a specifically designed VIP screening lounge with bar. The film will be presented in Salong 4 at 5pm and at 8pm. This is a unique alternative option to view Recoil’s film at the ONLY lounge of its type in Sweden.

Located in the Bistro Barbros right next door to Bio Rio, the Salon is a cross between your living room and a cinema - a fully equipped screening facility with 5.1 surround sound catering for 35 people. The venue offers three options for seating : Floor chairs, Sofa or Bar table. Each seat gives you access to a refrigerated mini-bar for the duration (before leaving the salon, you check out and pay your bar bill). Seating is unnumbered – select yours when you arrive – so we recommend getting there early.

The 35 people who attend Salong 4′s VIP screening 1 will receive their own personal Q & A with Alan immediately after the screening – a very intimate affair!
